After the dance was done, Jade went back to her quarters to change before she would get back to the party. He slunk after her, swift as a shadow and just as silent. Just as she opened the door, he appeared in the window behind her and said, "That was a beautiful dance you did."
The princess started at his voice, as he had hoped she would. "Who are you and what are you-" she began as she was turning around. "Wait! I know you. You're Rumpelstiltskin!"
The legendary imp jumped down from his perch and bowed to her. "Indeed I am. And I know you to be Princess Jade of the destroyed kingdom of Verdure, brought into your title by Queen Helena herself. You live in comfort and security, never wanting for anything, and yet... you are still bound by fears of losing that which you have become accustomed to."
"I don't care how you know my name, but never speak like that to me again! Guar-!"
Rumpelstiltskin muffled her shout for Leopold's guards and whispered in her ear, "You also long for adventure outside the palace walls. You have been Helena's personal plaything, never allowed to leave her presence for too long or have thoughts which did not please her, despite the good-natured way she pushed and prodded you along the way to become the vibrant young woman you are now. I can give you that if you wish."
Jade bit his finger and slapped his face as she pulled away. "How dare you?! Don't you dare speak to a princess of the realm like that. I am happy with my life and I don't need anyone else besides my mother!" Even as she said it, she knew it was a lie. He had discovered her secret desire, something no one else had known before, not even herself.
"The moonlight is beautiful tonight," he said after a while. "Why not walk with me along the beach below instead of going back the party?"
"But my mother-" Jade said nervously.
"Will never know I'm here, so long as we are both quiet. Now, go and change into something more comfortable and I will see you outside."
